The Swarm returned, larger and more ferocious than before. Captain Elena Vasquez stood on the bridge of the Starhawk, watching the tactical display. Hundreds of enemy ships were converging on Mars.

"Command, this is Ghost Lead. We have incoming hostiles. Requesting all available units."

"Copy, Ghost Lead. Kaelen's fleet is en route. Hold the line."

Elena looked at her squadron-twelve Starhawks, their pilots tired but determined.

"This is it," she said. "We hold or we die."

The Swarm emerged from the darkness, their red lights pulsing like a heartbeat. Elena's squadron dove into the enemy formation, cannons blazing, missiles streaking.

"Break left!" she shouted.

Marcus Webb rolled, dodging a beam. Elena fired, her cannons tearing through an alien fighter.

"They're everywhere," Marcus said.

"Then we fight everywhere," Elena replied.

The battle raged for hours. Starhawks fell, but the Swarm kept coming.

"Command, we're being overwhelmed," Elena said.

"Kaelen's fleet is two minutes out. Hold on."

Two minutes. Elena looked at her ammunition-empty.

"Fix bayonets," she said.

Marcus laughed. "We're in space."

"Then use your wings."

She fired her thrusters, ramming her Starhawk into an enemy fighter. The ship crumpled, exploding.

"One down," she said.

Marcus followed suit, his Starhawk tearing through another.

The Swarm wavered as Kaelen's fleet arrived, their blue beams cutting through the enemy.

"Command, the enemy is retreating."

"Copy, Ghost Lead. Good work. Come home."

Elena turned her Starhawk toward Earth, her squadron forming up behind her. Only six remained.

The war was far from over. But today, they had won.

She touched the photograph of her family, tucked into her flight suit.

"I'm coming home," she whispered.

The stars watched in silence.

The battle was just beginning.

But Elena Vasquez was ready.

She had to be.

The Swarm would return.

And she would be waiting. Always.
